Chesapeake Paddlers Association offers you this free zoom workshop – partnering with Moulton Avery, Director of the National Center for Cold Water Safety.
Did you know that cold water, adverse weather, and hazardous waters are the most important safety challenges that paddlers face? What can you do to avoid getting yourself in trouble?
What’s a wind shadow and how does it lure so many paddlers into deep trouble -even in summer? What to do if caught in a thunderstorm? Tips for avoiding boat traffic …what colors show up on the water ….and more.
Well, for starters, you can learn about Contributing Factors. These are the reasons that people get into deep trouble. They’re things you can change, actions that you can take, stuff you can control. Understanding them empowers you to prepare for the challenges that Mother Nature can throw at you.
Being a safe paddler isn’t just a matter of common sense. Paddling has a lot of hazards that aren’t at all obvious. Things that don’t look dangerous until you learn to recognize them – like cold water, offshore winds, strainers, squalls, and tides and currents.
In this class, we’ll examine some classic accidents and review the lessons learned. You’ll see how they all share some of the same contributing factors. Knowledge is power, and this class will give you tools to make your paddling safer and more fun.
